The Cy Young Story

Cy Young Industries, Inc. is fondly remembered in Kansas City as the “Cy Young Hardware Family”, yet, no relation to the pitcher, was founded in 1948 by Charles “Cy” Young. He and his wife Gertrude prided themselves on raising a family of entrepreneurs. The youngest son, Rick Young, carried on the family tradition of ever-growing knowledge and expertise. Rick owned his own business as a custom upholsterer and offering antique restoration. As his business grew and evolved, so did his imagination. As a patron at the movies, he realized a need to enhance the overall experience-clean seats and Cupholders! This lead to the invention and patent of the first plastic cupholder armrest that swept the nation in the cinema market. Drawing on his experience of custom upholstery, Rick and his wife, Carrie, introduced a concept of renovating the facility while it “sleeps”. Now the next generation carries forth the traditional business values and traits that have been proven successful over the years.

CYI is an industry leader of public assembly seating. Growing our business to become an OEM and owning our molds and dies allows us to produce parts for our renovations. As demand for our componentry grows, subsequent tooling is being developed for vintage seating and parts for older chairs that still exist, but are hard to find.

CYI currently employs three generations of the Young family. The Cy Young family is well-rooted in the Kansas City area and has the “Cy” as we like to call it, vision, imagination and perseverance. Cy Young is a closely held, owner operated corporation. We pride ourselves on being hands-on and present with each project!
